How to Clean Your Radio Accessories

How to Clean Your Radio Accessories

With the COVID-19 pandemic, regular cleaning and sanitization are necessary for radio accessories to ensure the safety and health of your team members.

We have outlined some useful tips on how to clean your radio accessories.

Radio accessories can easily be cleaned using 70%+ alcohol wipes (or rubbing alcohol) and common store-bought bleach-free disinfectant wipes such as Clorox and Lysol wipes kill COVID-19 and other viruses and bacteria. The wipes and rubbing alcohol are safe to use on the plastic surfaces of our products and all cables and wires.

For rubbing alcohol: Apply a small amount of alcohol on a lint-free cloth so that it’s damp but not soaking and rub all over the surface. It will dry quickly.

For 70%+ alcohol wipes and bleach-free disinfectant wipes: These are usually more wet, so we advise that you dry the surface with a lint-free cloth after disinfecting.

DO NOT SUBMERGE any radio accessory with electronic parts or connectors in cleaning solution.

For Waterproof Accessories:
Our waterproof products can be submerged in a mild soap solution and water. However, they must be securely fastened to the radio to avoid getting the connector pins wet.

If they are not connected to the radio, we encourage you to use the methods indicated above (rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipe, disinfectant wipes) or you can still use a mild soap solution and water by submerging a lint-free cloth in the soap and water solution, wringing in out before wiping down the surface to avoid getting the exposed connector pins wet, and drying it with a lint-free cloth afterwards.

Situational Awareness vs. Noise Blocking

Situational Awareness vs. Noise Blocking

When choosing an earpiece for a specific application, a major consideration will be whether you require noise cancelling or situational awareness. Generally, you cannot have both without getting into high-end, specialized audio accessories.

So, how do you know whether to go with an earpiece that allows for situational awareness or one that blocks noise effectively? Keep reading for an overview of each type.

Situational Awareness Earpieces

These earpieces enable you to monitor your radio while maintaining awareness of your surroundings and the ability to identify potentially dangerous external sounds.

Situational awareness earpieces are ideal for:

  • Construction workers who need remain aware of their surroundings on the site.
  • Military personnel who need to stay alert in high-risk situations.
  • Ambulance and EMS workers who need to be able to communicate via radio and face-to-face with those involved in an accident.

For example, picture a traffic police officer at a car accident scene. They have a lot to deal with: talking to victims and witnesses, calling for other services like fire or paramedics, and communicating with their own dispatch, all while making sure they don’t get hit by other cars still driving down the road. In this application, situational awareness is crucial to ensure the officer’s safety.

Our acoustic tube earpieces can be fitted with several different types of situational awareness tips (ME-1, CB-1) as well as other non-acoustic tube earpiece styles.

Noise Blocking or Cancelling Earpieces

Noise cancelling earpieces effectively block out all external sounds so that you can focus completely on the information coming through your earpiece. Cutting out all distractions allows you to give your undivided attention to the task at hand.

These earpieces are ideal for:

  • Large event security personnel who don’t need to communicate with attendees.
  • Riot police who don’t need to interact with the public.
  • Loud environments where face-to-face interaction isn’t required.

Continuing with the police example, noise blocking becomes more desirable in situations like large crowds where riot police are required. There is no real need to talk to the public and all the external noise makes it hard to communicate with fellow officers and dispatch, so they may prefer noise blocking or cancelling audio accessories. Impact offers P1W, P2W earpieces as well as select speaker mics and headsets that block or reduce background noise.

Earpieces and Surveillance Kits. Which is right for you?

Earpieces and Surveillance Kits. Which is right for you?

It’s time to purchase a new surveillance earpiece. You want to pick the perfect product, but you don’t want to go overboard in terms of technological capabilities or cost. So how do you choose?

One of the most common questions we get from customers is whether they should go with a 1-wire surveillance earpiece or a 2-wire surveillance earpiece. We created this blog to help answer that question, so keep reading to learn more!

What Is a 1-Wire Surveillance Earpiece?

With 1-wire surveillance earpieces, there is a single cable that travels from the radio connector to the PTT unit and then onto the earpiece. Because they don’t have as much cable as their 2-wired cousins, users of 1-wire surveillance earpieces are limited to wearing the PTT and mic on their collar or lapel.

When Is a 1-Wire Surveillance Earpiece Used?

The most common markets for 1-wire surveillance earpieces are:

  • Security teams and patrols
  • Event staff
  • Hotels and hospitality

In general, 1-wire surveillance earpieces are more ideal for warmer climates or when users are wearing short-sleeved shirts or uniforms. 1-wire listen-only earpieces are best suited for situations in which users only need to monitor radio communications and are typically more cost-effective than 1-wire earpieces with PTT and mic. Listen-only earpieces could be used by shift supervisors or police departments, for example, who do not need to talk to others (they simply want to keep an ear on radio traffic).

What Is a 2-Wire Surveillance Earpiece?

2-wire surveillance earpieces have separate cables for the PTT/mic unit and earpiece, which gives users the option of wearing the PTT/mic on their lapel or running it down their sleeve.

When Is a 2-Wire Surveillance Earpiece Used?

The most common markets for 2-wire surveillance earpieces are:

  • Police
  • Corrections
  • High-end security at establishments like casinos and resorts
  • Factories, construction sites, and industrial uses

2-wire surveillance earpieces are more “covert”, making them the preferred choice for discrete applications like among secret service agents who hold the mic in the hand.

Regardless of your industry or profession, choosing the right type of surveillance earpiece at the outset is the best way to ensure you get the most out of the device over its lifetime.
